10 Little-Known Stories From American History : Brutal One-Man Stands | FULL DOCUMENTARY
The history of world conflict is often decided by the wills and whims of mighty kings and vast empires, sorted out in bloody fashion in large-scale battles between massive armies.
But, many times, some of history’s most intriguing tales of bravery, selflessness and sacrifice are found in the all-too-rare instances of singular brave individuals deciding to risk life and limb in interest of saving themselves or, often times, their friends and loved ones.
Many of these stories have been lost to the annals of history, overlooked in favor of tales of great conquerors and heads of state.
Tonight, History At The OK Corral seeks to remedy that as we bring you 10 stories of little-known one-man stands from the depths of American history.

The history of intertribal warfare is often , regrettably, overlooked in the scope of posterity. Though many of the conflicts went unrecorded, the stories that have survived bespeak a world awash in the chaos and violence that has engulfed every culture and society- to some extent or another- throughout world history. From the jungles of Central America, to the frigid plains of Canada, to the d...

On the high plains of Colorado, during the mid-1860's, clashes between the tribes and the soldiers and settlers now living in increasingly closer proximity to each other became more and more frequent. In response to your question, I think the United States was founded by relentlessly strong, determined, and focused people. The European immigrants that came were tough, the first colonists and settlers crossing west were tough, the Black Americans and their African ancestors were tough, and the Native Americans fought with everything they had to hold on to what was theirs. All for liberty, all for land, all to become the great dream. What an incredible culture and country they, all together created. A family has its problems but here you all stand. Hello from Colombia South America

There is an important part of the Sand Creek massacre that shouldn't be left out here. That chief raised the US flag because the band that was attacked at Sand Creek was friendly. John Chivington attacked the wrong group and his massacre was fueled by pure racist bloodlust. One of the other commanders present that day was Silas Soule, who knew that the camp they were attacking was friendly, and that this was just a rage massacre of civilians. He belayed Chivington's orders and instead ordered his men to stand down. Soule would go on to write a damning letter to the congress detailing the savagery of Chivington's men, which wouldn't lead to disciplinary action against Chivington during his time in the military, but it did ruin his political aspirations as he became known as "the butcher of sand creek". You can find that letter online today, and it's displayed at the Sand Creek massacre site, and I recommend reading it. Soule was later murdered in the streets of Denver by some of Chivington's men. There is a plaque in that spot today, and people still decorate Silas Soule's grave. Also, before joining the Colorado 1st, he was an abolitionist who worked on the underground railroad, and fought in abolitionist militias during the bleeding Kansas period, along side the likes of John Brown. Silas Soule was a true hero, and here in Colorado we still decorate his grave today.

I read in one account of John coulters run, in the brutal excitement and mind numbing exhaustion of what was happening, his mind snapped and he dropped to the ground and started going in circles using his legs, like a car burning rubber doing donuts. His pursuers were thrown off kinda and tripping out for a moment. Then he jumped up n took off again.

I love some american representations of their history. The americans lost about 30 killed, the British about 15. To characterise this as a "battle" between the "mighty British Empire" and the defiant rebels is at best amusing.

There is a small ending to Keseberg's story that paints him in a more sympathetic light. While following the fourth relief party home, a piece of fabric sticking out of the snow caught his eye. He pulled at it, and dug up a little girl's body that had been hastily buried in the snow during a previous rescue mission... HIS little girl's body. He broke down into tears, having no idea that both of his children were now dead, his infant son having died at the camp earlier. I think that was the moment when he realized what he'd done. If rescuers could just throw his only child away and ignore his and his wife's heartache, what had he done to so many at Truckee Lake? It's interesting to me that he denied killing Tamsen Donner until the end of his life. After going through all that, and being part of the death of so many people, he either was truly innocent of that murder, or he wanted the surviving children of Tamsen to believe their mother died in dignity, trying to reach them.

Guerilla fighters? Really? Have you actually STUDIED the 1780 Campaign of Greene versus Cornwallis in the South? Francis Marion, Pickens and other South Carolina were executing hit and run raids on small British outposts, patrols and supply convoys. That is guerilla warfare. They were retaining the faith of their fellow citizens in eventual victory by suppressing Loyalist military and political assets and confining British control to within 100 meters of their strongest columns, garrisons and convoys. King's Mountain was a Guerilla victory for the "Over Mountain Men" (ie. Appalachia) when they combined to execute a swift mounted rifle attack, maneuvering the Loyalist light forces onto a bare mountain top and then dismounting to harass him with rifle fire until the Loyalists, without food, water or ammunition and exhausted after many attempts to break out of the Patriot trap, surrendered, hoping they wouldn't all suffer the fate Ferguson had promised the Patriots if they refused to take the oath to the King. Morgan was not a guerilla fighter, certainly not between 1775 and 1780. He had been a commander of light troops under Montgomery in Canada in 1776, with Washington and then Gates in 1777 and then was furloughed for his health, coming back only at the desperate pleas of Greene after Gate's defeat at Camden. He commanded the light troops under Greene, and when Greene split his army for faster movement and sustainment, he gave Morgan a force of Continental light infantry from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina State troops and Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina militia. He maneuvered as a conventional force while being pursued by Tarleton and fought as a conventional force at Cowpens. At Cowpens, he set up a first line of South and North Carolina militia who were formed in TYPICAL infantry battalion line formations. On the wings where the terrain did not offer the line full protection, he stationed Continental and Virginia and North Carolina State light dragoons and North and South Carolina mounted riflemen. The first line was also mounted infantry, but their horses were secured behind the third line a couple hundred yards behind them. He asked them to give him a volley or two and then head for the rear around the second line, the light troops on the flanks covering the withdrawal. American riflemen did not carry bayonets and musket armed militia also did not have bayonets and going toe to toe with British and Loyalist regulars and their bayonets was near suicidal. The second line was also drawn up in battalion line formation, comprised of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina infantry armed mostly with muskets. They too were asked to give a volley or two and to the flanks of the third line. Again, the mounted troops would cover the withdrawal. The third line consisted of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia Continental light infantry and Virginia and North Carolina State infantry arrayed in two battalions in line formation. Morgan hoped that the British and Loyalist battalions would arrive before the third line, made up of some of the best infantry in the American army (the 1st Maryland would stop the Brigade of Guards in their tracks later at Guilford Courthouse with a volley and bayonet charge accompanied by William Washington's Continental light dragoons) blown, out of formation, believing they were pursuing fleeing militia and having lost many of their officers and sergeants. This would give him the opportunity to inflict a severe reverse on Tarleton. As it was, the battle plan worked even better because seeing the light dragoons and the third line standing firm, the militia rallied and curled around the flanks of the British and Loyalist infantry, forcing the surrender of the 7th Foot (Royal Fusiliers, for the second time in this war, the 7th lost its colors, the first time being in Canada in 1776), the 2d Battalion, 71st Foot (Fraser's Highlanders), the Second Battalion of Converged Light Infantry (the British stripped British and Loyalist battalions of their grenadier and light infantry companies which were collected into elite specialist battalions) and the infantry of the British Legion, a Loyalist force raised and commanded by Tarleton. Having collected the POWs, colors and music and weapons of the defeated force, Morgan renewed his retreat through the mid-Carolinas, meeting Greene in Virginia, north of the Neuse River. Morgan then exited stage right, his poor health precluding his further participation in the Southern campaigns. Cowpens was a conventional 18th century battle in which one general (Morgan) better managed his assets then his opponent (Tarleton), one of a series of battles during Greene's first campaign, again along typical 18th century campaigns, such as Washington's victories at Trenton and Princeton in 1776-77. The guerilla war was the brutal, nasty campaign being fought between the Patriot irregulars and the Loyalist militia in South Carolina in 1780 to 1783.
